A montage of kiln 4 unloading, after three days of slow firing to 1280 degrees and two days of cooling down. With the help from one of the advisors Luke, I had a successful firing (which might not always be the case in ceramics). I sometimes even miss the beeping sound of the kiln controller, hence no trending audio for this one. On the 22nd April, I am partnering with @laichankee for an artist talk (in Cantonese) about my residency at the EKWC @ekwc_oisterwijk where I will speak in detail about my journey there - registration link in bio.

Each stone-cast piece begins with its own hand-coiled clay former. This clip shows coils being pinched and laid, slowly building the vessels in my studio at the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC @ekwc_oisterwijk )
These clay vessels/formers took weeks to dry before entering the kiln, where they were fired to 1280°C.

Being free from the limitation of kiln size seems unrealistic in ceramics, yet that’s how I feel when I was working at the @ekwc_oisterwijk I was able to go as big as I can. With this specific stone casting technique I first started with a series of small test piece, later on through overcoming technical challenges such as firing schedule and firing temperature, I was able to create my largest piece ever. Here is a closer look into the details, and two behind-the-scenes clips comparing the size of a test piece to the actual piece, when they were sitting in the spray cabin.

In ceramics, three months of time can go by very quickly as some of you might already know, the making itself is just part of it, and there also comes with time for drying, kiln packing, firing and unloading. With that said I felt the same for my time at the EKWC @ekwc_oisterwijk conducting both making and research at the same time within a 3-months residency felt challenging, yet with the support I received I felt confident in what I was able to bring together in the end. The five vessels shown here are part of my research into experimental glaze casting. By subverting the traditional ceramic processes, I returned to the nature of glaze itself, melting shards of stones within hand-coiled forms. Fired to over 1260°C, these vessels might be seen as man-made lava—where material, process, and chance meet. Deliberately moving away from the use of clay, the works you see here are formed from pure stone and glaze materials—where boundaries between structure and surface begin to dissolve, materials shift between holding and melting.

As I wrapped up my residency at the @ekwc_oisterwijk I had the pleasure to work with @renevanderhulst photographing my work. Perhaps I don’t post enough of my face here, as I’d like to keep the focus on my work and the making process of it. Anyways here you go, here is a rare one, a picture of myself (not covered in dust) and my work captured by René. As I settle back to my studio and daily routine I will post more work photos and studio shots about the residency.

As my residency began to draw to a close, I found myself spending most of my time in the spray cabin — which slowly became my favourite place to be. The lighting felt almost futuristic, and the constant white noise of the extraction system was strangely soothing.
It was there that I de-moulded all my pieces from the hand-coiled ceramic shell moulds, before cold-working and polishing the surfaces. Some of the works were heavy and difficult to move around, and I’m very grateful for the help of one of the advisors, @tjalling_quinten_mulder at the @ekwc_oisterwijk .
This series has been physically demanding to make, with many techincal limitations to work through and around. Despite that, I’m incredibly excited to share this new body of work with you soon, a collection based on alternative glaze casting.
